Pigs are considered lucky in many cultures, as a symbol of abundance, happiness and intelligence. In Chile they are even more special. Locals in Pomaire, a small town west of Santiago, keep good luck charms called “Chanchitos.” These pigs are special because they only have three legs, and they are found in shops, homes and throughout the streets in Chile. The thought is that if these creatures can still stand with only three legs, they must be exceedingly strong. Known as the “good luck pig,” chanchitos are a beloved symbol of Chilean culture and good fortune.
